Bush's Third Term

You might be surprised who it is.

This stuff really isn't that complicated. Is the WSJ intentionally being dense?

Obama is in favor of surveillance, but opposed to immunity. He's not going to get a surveillance bill without immunity, so he has to vote for the one with immunity.

Obama is in favor of withdrawal from Iraq, even if it leaves an imperfect state, but he doesn't want to leave a failed state that is a breeding ground for terrorists. Bush and McCain want a much longer occupation.

Obama is in favor of fair trade, which is a form of free trade but does not describe NAFTA. He would seek to modify NAFTA, using the leverage of an opt-out to do it. He admits that his tone during the primary stressed the potential use of the opt-out more than it should have. He would rather work with our partners than threaten them.

Obama has always recognized a right to bear arms and favored the death penalty. He disagreed with Roberts and Alito on Boumediene (habeas corpus for detainees) and Crawford (voter I.D.).

Bill Clinton started federal funding for faith-based charities in 1996, so I guess Bush is Clinton's third and fourth term and Obama is his fifth.

Obama has stated that he had problems with the federal welfare reform legislation, but he has been consistent in saying that the status quo in welfare was flawed. He was a leader on welfare reform in the Illinois legislature in the 90's.

Could it be that Obama is actually a centrist? Nah, that doesn't fit either the "most liberal" charge or the "running to the center" charge. It must be something dishonest!
